Lakeland Dark Sky Celebration

Lakeland Provincial Park & Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area were designated as a Dark-Sky Preserve on November 19, 2016, in partnership with Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. The park is 590 square kilometres in size with the core area of the Dark-Sky Preserve having a nighttime sky quality level of approximately 21.5 mag/arcsec2. Annually a Dark Sky Celebration event is held, this year activities will be hosted at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park.

Nocturnal Evening Programs: 6:30pm—8:30pm
Amphitheatre Area — Indoors & Nearby Campsite (Campground, Loop C)

  • Bring your curiosity & discover some fascinating facts of the Boreal Forest wildlife! Discover the superpowers of Owls (flight, sounds, & digestion) with Alberta Parks & Lakeland Industry and Community Association (LICA) staff and volunteers.
  • Lac La Biche County Libraries welcome you to drop into their family ‘story time’ program, and Alberta Parks will have a craft station, along with other stellar displays, face painting, & fun activities available inside the amphitheater!
  • Join Alberta Parks for an interpretive walk, starting at the amphitheater at 7:00pm, for a 30-minute guided walk focusing on the importance of Dark Sky in the Boreal Forest.

Guided Star Gazing: 8:00pm — 10:00pm
Amphitheatre Area — Lawn / Deck (Campground, Loop C)

  • Enjoy a night sky tours (weather pending) with volunteers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada—Edmonton Chapter as they  take participants on a journey through the stars. As the sky darkens the public can be treated to views of double stars, nebula, clusters, planets and galaxies. Let's hope for clear skies!
  • If poor conditions occur, RASC volunteers will lead a talk in the amphitheater with an opportunity for questions & answers as well.

 

More Information

For the Dark Sky Celebration please be mindful of cellphones/cameras/flashlights use in program areas. Please use stargazing etiquette & reduce use of all lights, and use dim ‘night’ or red-lights only. Red cellophane will be available to cover any white lights.

Please be mindful and park in designated parking areas while attending programs.
